Role: UX / UI Designer
Duration: 2 weeks - August 2021

Challange:

Every year stress and anxiety levels rise, bringing a lot of problems and difficulties into people’s lives. Create an app that helps people deal with those issues.

Research:

To better understand the user perspective I have conducted User Surveys with 17 participants and 7 User Interviews with the goal to gain information about the relationship with this topic. Also, I've analyzed some competitor's apps to understand their approach to these issues.

Insights:

  • 60% of participants are willing to dedicate 1-2 times a week to their mental health.
  • 55% didn’t try Meditation, Mindfulness, and Journaling or didn't find them useful.
  • People’s goal is to better understand themselves and their feelings.
  • 84% of participants won’t pay for an app.
  • Competitor apps offer mainly Meditation, Breathing exercises, Mindfulness, and Journaling.
  • Competitor apps are based mostly on daily efforts.

Design Goals:

Effective

Providing the users an actual method to improve their mental health.

simple

Must be accessible for everyone without requiring any skill or previous knowledge.

fast

It has to fit into the busy life, 1-2 times a week.

After some research, I discovered Philosophical Meditation which is a guided practice that allows us to analyze our feelings in multiple ways thanks to some clever suggestions and doesn’t require daily practice.

UI Design:

Feeling selection

Having to choose from this set of fundamental emotions allows a more detailed and useful self-analysis based on the situation, this section affects the following questions and tips. From this step a relaxing sound accompanies the process, it can be turned off anytime.

Deep breathing

In this step, the user will perform 3 deep breaths allowing a calmer and focused state.

Philosopical meditation

The questions and tips guide the user into a detailed exploration of the feeling. It can be completed through text or voice input. The user can also attach some images to better evoke and describe the emotions.

Recap

In this section, the user can see how it’s been going in the last and previous months, also can access the previously added diary pages.

Diary page

The user can see the selected emotion, the images attached, play the voice recording, and read the analysis.

Testing:

I have conducted 6 moderated in-person Usability Tests. The goal was to understand how usable and familiar the app feels.

  • 85% comprehended the interface without issues
  • 50% expressed the need for Image input
  • 70% expressed the need for notifications to remind them to add diary pages

Roadmap:

  • Evaluating ads into the app
  • Quantitative analysis of app usage
